Exciting exchange in Bratislava on Tuesday, April 5: YPAS and the Evangelic Lutheran Lyceum

On Tuesday, April 5, there is a special event on the itinerary for the YPAS travelers: an exchange and recital with the Evangelic Lutheran Lyceum (Evanjelické lyceum) in Bratislava, Slovakia. The school was instituted in 1606 shortly after the establishment of the first Lutheran congregation in Bratislava. It was modeled on the German secondary school and flourished until 1672, when Hapsburg Emperor Leopold authorized the takeover of the school by the Jesuits as part of the Counter-Reformation. The school reopened again in 1681 and grew in prominence as well as enrollment into the early 20th century. In 1923 the school was taken over by the new national government of Czechoslovakia and transformed into the State German Secondary School. In 1944, even this form of the school was abolished and the school remained closed until September 1991, when it was re-established by the Slovak Lutheran Church in cooperation with the national Office of Education. Speakers at the opening service on 2 September, 1991 included General Bishop Uhorskai of the Slovak Lutheran Church as well as Alexander Dubchek, President of the Czechoslovak National Assembly. Today’s Evangelical Lyceum consists of two units with a total enrollment of around 840 students. For more information (in Slovak) and pictures, please see the official website of the Evangelic Lutheran Lyceum.

Incantato Restaurant: Michal in Prague - Farewell Dinner on Sunday, April 10

On Sunday, April 10 the YPAS travelers spend their last night in Europe and will enjoy a special farewell dinner in Prague: at Restaurant Michal. The restaurant is situated in one of the oldest parts of historical Prague on the right bank of the River Vltava, only a few steps away from the stone arches of Charles Bridge. The building in which the fully air-conditioned restaurant is situated was reconstructed in Art Nouveau style in the second half of the 19th century, but from its interior it is clear that its roots go back as far as the Early Gothic period. Their typical menu includes both typical Czech dishes and international cuisine.

Haydn Organ at St. Stephen's Cathedral, Vienna

On Wednesday, April 6, the Youth Performing Arts School Touring Concert Choir of Louisville will have a highlight performance at St. Stephen’s Cathedral in Vienna. For this performance the group will sing to the music played by the Haydn organ. For more information about the other organs of the cathedral, please click here.

The Haydn organ was installed back in 2009 and provides a special highlight for the Joseph Haydn Year 2009 at St. Stephen’s. Joseph Haydn and his brothers received a comprehensive education at the Cathedral and gathered almost 10 years’ musical experience while serving as members of the Cathedral Choir. The new instrument has been named the Haydn Organ in honour of their contribution. The instrument was blessed by Archbishop Cardinal Christoph Schönborn on Saturday, 24 October 2009. The inauguration ceremony marked the official opening of the 2009 St. Stephen’s Organ Festival, which was held under the patronage of Cardinal Schönborn and Vienna Mayor Michael Häupl.
